Skincare Dos and Don’ts for the Mindful Consumer

Skincare Dos and Don’ts for the Mindful Consumer

At k’pure, we believe that what you put on your body is just as important as what you put in your body. Whether it's safeguarding your skin from the sun or deciphering the extensive ingredient list on your deodorant label — it’s important to not only be informed about the products your consuming, but to be intentional with how you use them.

In this guide we delve into the dos and don’ts of skincare for those venturing into a more mindful approach for their daily skincare routine.

The dos

1. Establish a consistent routine

The best way to stay consistent is to simplify your routine. That means finding a few core, quality products that compliment your skin type and goals. With less steps to complete, you’re more likely to make time for your skincare routine. This will also help your avoid overloading your skin with too much product, which can clog your pores, causing breakouts and irritation of the skin.

2. Prioritize clean ingredients

Natural ingredients are not only rich in vitamins, antioxidants and other nourishing qualities that can compliment your skin — but they’re also gentle on skin, free of harmful chemicals and have less of an impact on the environment. We chose to curate our natural skincare collection so we could provide a more intentional alternative thats kinder to both the skin and the planet.

Fun fact: Natural ingredients are also more biocompatible with the skin, which can lead to better absorption of the products, and therefore more positive results!

3. Sun protection without harsh chemicals

Protecting your skin from the sun AND harmful chemicals can be challenging. Especially when most sunscreens contain a lot of toxins — which not only prove to be harmful when they absorb into your skin, but can also take a toll on the natural environment around you. To make matters worse, they may even contribute to pesky clogged pores and breakouts!

Integrating a natural daily SPF will reduce the risk of skin irritation and also minimize your exposure to those nasty toxins. We recommend our Smarten Up SPF — a natural powerhouse that not only shields your skin from the sun but also provides an extra layer of defence against pollution. Plus, it keeps your skin hydrated and well-nourished.

The don’ts

1. Synthetic fragrances

Skincare products with synthetic fragrances often contain a mix of undisclosed chemicals that can trigger allergies and skin irritation. A healthier alternative lies in choosing products with natural scents or essential oils. These botanical-based fragrances not only smell good, but also offer skincare benefits. Certain essential oils, for instance, can have soothing, anti-inflammatory properties, which can tackle problems like acne, dryness and puffiness.

2. Over-exfoliating

Although exfoliation is an important component of skincare, it's essential to be cautious not to overdo it. Excessive exfoliation has the potential to remove the natural oils and protective barrier of your skin, resulting in dryness, irritation, and even breakouts.

Striking the right balance and determining the appropriate frequency of exfoliation for your specific skin type is key to maintaining a healthy and radiant complexion. We recommend using a gentle exfoliator 2-3 times per week at most.

3. Adopting a one-size fit all approach

Everyone’s skin is different. Depending on your lifestyle, the food you eat and your skin type — the products on your bathroom shelf might look a little different. That’s why it’s important to listen to your skin's needs and make adjustments to your routine as necessary!

For example, if you have sensitive skin, you may opt for a unscented cleanser over ones with fragrance. If you have dry skin, you may benefit from a whipped moisturizer to maintain your skin’s optimal hydration. What works for someone, may not work for someone else and navigating your optimal routine will require some trial and error along the way.

So there you have it! By prioritizing clean ingredients, embracing a consistent routine, and avoiding these common skincare-don’ts — you can feel empowered to make informed decisions for your skins wellbeing.
